Empty shops

Local opinions vary as to why Hoylake has so many empty shops. Some say it's the effect of the recession, others that business rates are too high and reduce profits.

Yet more point out that Hoylake is a 'ribbon' development; there is no central space where people can gather to meet and browse in a variety of shops.

Publicly available statistics show that Hoylake is Wirral's lowest ranking Key Town Centre in the UK retail rankings. It also has the fifth highest vacancy rate on the Wirral, a surprising figure given the demographic profile of the area.

Whatever the reason, in the early months of 2010 there are even more shops and businesses in the process of closing down, a few every week. This presents a challenge to the group that it is eager to take up.

Negotiations are under way to gain access to some of the shops and use them for community activities such as art/craft exhibitions and creative workshops. These will bring colour and vitality back to the streets and encourage a feeling of optimism throughout the community. This, in turn, can lead to would-be shop owners becoming attracted to Hoylake as a place to set up their businesses.

We are applying for empty shops funding and grants, liaising with local landlords and agents, and asking the community how you want to shape Hoylake's future.

We support the principles of the Empty Shops Network

Have you got an idea for a business, but don't know how to go about it? Do you own an empty shop and want to see it smartened up and used for the benefit of the community, whilst enjoying SIGNIFICANT rate rebates?

Arts in particular are at the forefront of much urban regeneration throughout the UK. Want to give it a try... and help Hoylake get its Mojo back? We may be able to help you....
